In a press release here, the company stated the decision will allow the plant to meet the accelerated domestic demand for the newly launched Renault Kwid and prepare for introduction of Datsun's third model in the coming months.
The Renault-Nissan Alliance is set to implement a third shift at its manufacturing plant near Chennai in response to what it called a strong demand for its current line-up, and keeping in mind the launch of upcoming models. From this week, the plant will operate a night shift on one of its two production lines, which will effectively increase overall annual capacity.
In a press release here, the company stated the decision will allow the plant to meet the accelerated domestic demand for the newly launched Renault Kwid and prepare for introduction of Datsun's third model in the coming months. The plant will continue to deliver the export demand for Chennai-produced vehicles around the world like Sunny and Micra. Kwid bookings have crossed the one lakh mark.
When contacted, the alliance spokesperson said that the plant produces over 1,000 units per day under two shifts across three brands of Renault, Nissan and Datsun. The official, however, refused to give exact details on the add-on volume post introduction of third shift. The alliance plant currently has an installed capacity of 4,80,000 units per annum and is yet to achieve the full capacity, the spokesperson added.
The plant, which is already the largest alliance manufacturing facility in the world, started operation in March 2010 following an initial Rs 4,500 crore investment which has now risen to Rs 6,100 crore. Since then, 12 all-new Nissan, Renault and Datsun models have been introduced to its two production lines catering for both domestic and international markets.
